A prolific fundraiser is getting his walking shoes back on in aid of a charity music event, held in memory of a popular Upton man.

Upton's Clint Varndall will walk from the town to the cathedral roundabout in Worcester and back, then tackle a three mile route in Upton, in a distance similar to a marathon's.

His mammoth walk will get underway at 7am from The Plough pub, with proceeds going toward covering the costs of the Ian Downton Memorial- Drunken Monkey Rock Festival, a one day music event in aid of Midlands Air Ambulance.

On the same day as his walk, The Talbot Head Hotel will be hosting an open pool tournament and there will live music held at The Plough, with the events also aimed at drumming up funds for the music festival.

Mr Varndall, whose last charity venture was back in 2012 when he walked to Birmingham and back in support of the city's women's hospital, said: "I want to see everybody have a good time, and it's nice to see the whole town getting involved in raising money.

"It's a bit of a comeback really, and I'm really looking forward to it. It'll be good to get back out there and help people again.

"Training is going well. It's a bit achy after all this time, but that's good as it's a sign it's paying off. I've even been training while carrying bricks in a rucksack to get my back stronger.

"The festival will be great for the town, and the air ambulance is a great cause. You never know when you might need the service. Anything can happen at any time."

His charity walk will go ahead on Sunday, May 10, and there will be bucket collections in Upton on the day.

The music event made its debut last year, in memory of Ian Downton, and raised more than £5,000 for the air ambulance- Mr Downton's favourite charity.

Stuart Evans, whose band Riff/Raff will be headlining the music extravaganza, said: "Last year the event was well supported, and many people turned out to support the charity.

"Ian was a popular guy and a keen motorcyclist, and his favourite charity was the air ambulance.

"We're hoping this year's event raises even more money."

It is set to go ahead on June 13, at The Drum and Monkey Pub, Newbridge Green, near Upton, from 12pm.

There will be more than ten bands playing and tickets are priced at £15.
