PUPILS from ten different primary schools tried out their debating skills by battling it out with each other.

The debating competition was organised by Sarah Watkins, assistant head at Lord Scudamore, to develop the speaking and listening skills of pupils.

The scheme called Speak Up saw 30 children from year six debate topical issues, such as banning school uniform, the internet and homework.

The children had previously had tips on debating from MP Jesse Norman.

Ms Watkins said: "This was a challenging test for the year six pupils but they showed amazing confidence and their presentations were engaging and thought provoking."

Stretton Sugwas argued their way through to the final and then beat Canon Pyon to clinch the trophy.

The competition was judged by high school pupils at Whitecross High, under the watchful eye of headteacher, Tim Knapp.

The schools taking part were: Lord Scudamore, Stretton Sugwas, Ledbury, Trinity, St. James, Holmer, Canon Pyon, Burghill, Marden and Llangrove.
