A YOUNG girl from Ross-on-Wye is raising money for her carers group by completing a 5k glow in the dark run.

Olivia Lerego-Jenkins, 11, of Lakeside Drive, saved her mother’s life when she was just four by calling an ambulance when her mum suffered a severe asthma attack.

Now, Olivia will run the Blacklight 5k night time run at Cheltenham race course on May 2.

She will complete the race alongside her mum Hannah. Mrs Lerego, who suffers from chronic asthma, said: “I must have been unconscious for about 30 to 45 minutes and was too ill to move or talk.

“I don’t think I would be alive without Olivia.

I remember her calmly chatting away to the operator.

She really was a star that day.

“I’ve never done a run like this before. We did a 10k midnight walk through Hereford last year. Olivia found this online and it looks like a lot of fun.

“We’ve downloaded an app, ‘from the couch to 5k’, and we’ve got new trainers on the way.”

Olivia was awarded a Good Young Citizens Award from West Mercia Police in October last year, after she climbed Mount Snowdon to raise £400 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

She was also rewarded with a special letter from children’s author David Walliams, after her mother wrote to tell him of her daughter’s achievements.

Mrs Lerego added that all money raised from the run will go towards Herefordshire Young Carers where Olivia is a registered carer.

“The group is particularly helpful,” she said.
