THE go-ahead has been given to relocate a Hereford business set to be demolished to make way for a multi-million pound new road.

Garden machinery business Ron Smith has been on Widemarsh Street for 25 years but his company's site is the subject of a compulsory purchase order as it forms part of the soon-to-be-built Hereford Link Road stretching from Aylestone Hill to Edgar Street.

To ensure the business can continue it applied for planning permission to move onto land currently occupied by the former Tan Brook Adult Training Centre on Rockfield Road. More land bordering the vacant centre also forms part of the application.

The training centre will be demolished to make way for business while Rockfield Road will also be widened to ease access.

Speaking at a meeting of Herefordshire Council's Planning Committee, Councillor Brian Wilcox said the move would provide "benefits to everyone".

In January, the business's managing director, Ron Smith, said he was grateful to Herefordshire Council for finding the site.

"We have always said we want to stay in Hereford and we have got a lot of customers here," he added.

"We are all thankful we have the opportunity with the site to stay in Hereford and to look after our customers."
