THERE is currently a planning application for the construction of a cycleway/footway along the A480 at Credenhill.

While I am fully in favour of this objective, it does involve the destruction of 400 metres of a hedge that probably pre-dates local enclosure acts.

It is therefore a long-established linear habitat of major value to both plants and animals, especially as a wildlife corridor. Among the 12 woody plant species I have noted, of particular importance are English elm, damson and spindle.

A complex habitat such as this, once destroyed, cannot be recreated.

I would urge that consideration be given to the construction of the track on the field side of the hedge.

There would then be a natural safety barrier between vehicles and cyclists/pedestrians. The hedge would also act as a barrier to noise and traffic fumes.
