WE WOULD like to lend our voices to the subject of Ledbury supermarkets.

We do not support the Tesco proposal but do support the proposal from Sainsbury’s.

Tesco already has an established site, one that was acquired against Sainsbury in a debateable manner.

What is needed in Ledbury is competition as Tesco currently hold a majority share of the market – a situation that would not be improved by allowing Tesco to move to the Ledbury Welding and Engineering site.

I am not too bothered if Tesco is or is not allowed to acquire the LWE site so long as a competitor is allowed to locate in Ledbury.

However, it would be daft to have two supermarkets facing each other.

Therefore, if Tesco wishes to offer more lines etc then let it develop its existing site.

Another plus point in favour of Sainsbury’s proposal is that it intends to offer fuel.

This will provide competition to the existing petrol stations and hopefully give Ledbury residents better value.

We believe that Sainsbury’s was poorly treated over the application for the site that became occupied by Tesco. Ledbury should make amends and offer Sainsbury’s the chance to show how it can perform.
