Thank you for an accurate and comprehensive editorial in respect of the recent Referendum. The title “Brexit is a gamble on wishful thinking” summarised the situation perfectly a fact of which we will become shortly aware. I agree completely that the referendum debate sank to lows of personal attack, scaremongering and downright lies from both sides.

One issue that has not received much discussion is that of war within Europe. Within my family I have relatives, going back four generations, who have all fought in the armed services in European wars. My father served in Bomber Command, his father in the trenches, and then on through the Crimea to Waterloo. Shortly before our referendum it became increasingly clear that right wing groups within other European countries are clamouring for their own exit from Europe. Such exits seem to be based on a wish to close borders and to distrust other nationalities. Have we unwittingly started a trend that will return us to the mistrust and nationalist desires that led to conflict within the 1930’s ?
