Many of your readers will be aware that Lance Corporal Oliver Thomas ( Intelligence Corps)was killed in Afghanistan in 2014, aged 26, whilst serving with the British ArmedForces.
Oliver was local to Kington, educated at Lady Hawkins School and it would surely be appropriate for his name to be included on the War Memorial in Kington, in permanent recognition of his sacrifice, as those before him in two World Wars.
There is no reason why this should not be so. Kington Town Council who, as custodians of the War Memorial, are able to make this decision. Unfortunately, despite appropriate representations being made the town council as yet are not going ahead with Oliver's name to be included on the War Memorial.
The War Memorial was originally raised to honour the dead of the Great War. I am confident that the councillors, at the time, had no difficulty in agreeing to the names of those who died in World War Two being added to the memorial.
It is worth mentioning that the names of many service personnel killed on post World War Two operations have been added to war memorials. SSgt Philip Currass QGM, who was killed in the Falklands conflict in 1982, is remembered on the memorial at Old Radnor( his home ) , his name is on the roll of honour in the church and is read out on Remembrance Sunday.
Please would you bring this to the attention to the people of Herefordshire for their support in having a fine young man's sacrifice recognised and recorded. I Suggest write to :Kington Town Council, Old Police Station, Kington
