ON June 17 I got myself in a tangle trying to reach Hereford’s Wyevale Garden Centre and finished up with three car wheels on the grass verge and one hanging over the (high) kerb opposite the garden centre. I could move neither forward nor back, however hard I tried.

Even before I could look up the AA’s phone number, a young man stopped and offered to help. He was soon followed by another young man and a lady out walking her dog, all of whom tried to push the car back on to the road.

Next, a lorry from a local brewery pulled up. The driver produced a rope, tied it to my car and then hailed another brewery lorry driver going in the opposite direction to ask for “a big knife, in case we need to cut the rope off afterwards”.

The first driver moved his lorry slowly backwards and within seconds my car was back on the straight and narrow – and we didn’t need the big knife either!

I was able to spend the rest of the day as planned, only stopping on the return journey at the M5 Strensham Services, where I spotted an AA patrol van. The AA man inspected the tyre and decided he ought to change the wheel for me – then I carried on home, safely.

This letter is to thank the lovely people of Hereford who gave up their time and effort to help me. I don’t know their names, but they will know who they are.
