I WISH to raise a distressing problem affecting my very dear great-granddaughter, and a sizeable number of Hereford people.

My great-granddaughter will soon be six. She was born prematurely and is severely disabled with cerebral palsy and other debilitating conditions.

For her mother, taking her to town – and on hospital appointments and other necessary visits – is a mission on its own, without the added frustration of there being no changing facilities for the disabled now that Mothercare has closed.

My great-granddaughter is doubly incontinent and must be changed as soon as possible. She is unable to move and has sensitive skin. To leave her in a soiled nappy is unpleasant, uncomfortable and degrading for her.

When this problem was posed to a local member of Herefordshire Council, I was appalled to be told there was nothing that could be done.

This is a serious issue that desperately needs to be addressed for all the disabled persons in Hereford.

I am writing this letter to raise awareness and to ask readers, and especially other carers, their opinion and, to perhaps invite a petition.

I do not accept that nothing can be done.

Many disabled people do not have a voice – and if my voice is not heard, then perhaps the Court of Human Rights should be appealed to.
