FIRSTLY, I would like to say a big well done to Peter Elliott and Andrew Wheeler, the bin men who caught the shoplifter in Ross-on-Wye, together with the person from Superdrug who gave chase (Bin men bag their man, Hereford Times, May 21).

If more people just did the right thing, what a different society we would be living in? How long would it take for the message to get around that people aren’t going to look the other way when something happens that we all know is wrong?

Sadly, I can’t say the same of their manager, Paul Morris. His decidedly faint support for his staff and the observation that “shops have insurance for this sort of thing” is exactly the attitude that allows low-level crime to blight our communities.

Perhaps if it had been his own car that had been broken into or his property that was being damaged he might have been pleased for someone to look his way, not the other.

Just do a bit – it will make the difference.
