I WAS sitting, as usual on a working day, in my car in a queue at the Asda lights at Belmont roundabout on May 13 at approximately 8.45am. I was adjacent to the Ship Inn on the left where I noticed several white vehicles parked up.

The occupants were sitting enjoying a drink from their flasks. I appreciate they were probably waiting for 9am before work could begin as one of the vehicles had sets of temporary traffic lights on a trailer, which made me think: ‘’Good they have come to mend the broken/bent railings on the junction of Asda and the A465 from a prior accident.”

But then I read on the side of the vehicles where they had come from – Cumbria! Surely we can find a more local firm to use than one from all those miles away.

No wonder many Herefordians have such a negative opinion of our local council if they feel that is a cost-effective option.

On the subject of Belmont junction, the main traffic lights do not help the flow at all and cause gridlock.

When they are broken, traffic flows freely even at peak times. When they are working, traffic backs up past Belmont, Lower Bullingham, Ross Road.

So can’t we please switch off these lights permanently?
