I WRITE with regard to the Hereford Times article on April 2 about the unsympathetic council sign which has been placed outside the BP garage in Edgar Street, heralding the Hereford city link road.

It announces work will begin in spring 2015 “delivering jobs and homes”, yet the five members of staff at the garage will lose their jobs as it needs to be knocked down to make way for the road.

As owner of the BP garage site, I have been unable to inform my staff when it will close, as Herefordshire Council has not given me a definite date.

Yet, in its response in the article a spokesman said the council has kept business owners up to date and that I should have kept staff informed.

So far this year we have been informed that our six-week notice of closure would be issued early in February.

This date came and went, and a new date was given for mid-February, which came and went, as did the end of February, as did mid-March, as did the end of March.

I have always kept the staff informed and have passed on all relevant information, as and when received, and have been doing so ever since the garage was put under threat of closure in 2006.

The staff need the information so they can plan their lives and look for future employment.

I would appreciate greatly that the un-named council spokesperson referred to in the story offers an apology, and grants both myself, and the staff affected, the good grace of a closure date. Or is this too much to ask?
