FOR quite a while now I’ve been wondering why the path running alongside Belmont Community Centre in Hereford has two barriers purporting to be crossings, when there is nothing particular to cross.

These barriers constitute a nuisance for people with pushchairs and particularly elderly people with limited mobility.

I recently witnessed a gentleman on an electric scooter give up any attempt to cross; he had to back up and take an alternative but longer route.

On whose behest and for what reason these barriers were erected I am quite intrigued to know. Some short-sighted person on the council must have had an idea of what they were hoping to achieve, but as I see it the only function of these barriers is to make life difficult for disabled and elderly people trying to get to the medical centre or to the pharmacy, or even over the road to Tesco.

I think the time has come for these useless articles to be removed.
