I AM constantly appalled at the number of drivers that drive their vehicles with their fog lights on when visibility is good, supposedly because they think it looks cool.

But my heart sinks further when I see instructors in driving school cars driving with their fog lights on in perfectly good weather with excellent visibility.

I would be extremely concerned if anyone I knew was having driving lessons from an instructor that clearly did not know the Highway Code.

The rules pertinent to fog lights are a legal requirement and to disobey means you are committing a criminal offence.

For those that need reminding: fog lights may be used when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet) but they must be switched off when visibility improves.

Front fog lamps dazzle other road users (especially when the road is wet and the light is reflected off the road) and rear fog lamps can obscure brake lights.
