I REFER to the letter from Kate Gilks regarding traffic speeds in Bodenham Road, Hereford, which implies that I have not done anything since this was taken up with me (Road must be made safer, Letters, February 12).

This is not the case. A written commitment has been given that the council will provide a pedestrian crossing in Bodenham Road as part of the Link Road construction programme. This will help elderly people cross the road in safety while also making motorists approach the crossing at a suitable speed.

Two periods of speed checks have been carried out in the last 18 months and neither identified a speeding problem.

In recent months, there have been complaints about vehicles parking and causing an obstruction in Bodenham Road. However, this may change with the impending introduction of waiting restrictions as requested by residents.

As speeds may increase when parking is prohibited, I have suggested that it may be appropriate to check vehicle speeds again sometime after those parking restrictions come into force.

Speed was not identified as the probable cause of the last two accidents referred to in Mrs Gilks' letter.
