HEREFORDSHIRE Council’s decision to recruit social workers from Romania and Spain shows how important Britain’s membership of the EU is, not only to Herefordshire’s agricultural and manufacturing businesses, but to public services.
Schools and colleges need to do more to encourage young people to see social work as a rewarding career. This is harder than ever with the Tory/Lib Dem coalition deep cuts increasing social workers’ caseloads and reducing their administrative support.
In the meantime, vulnerable young people need the best possible support from committed and experienced social workers.
Recruiting from the EU is much better for young people than relying on expensive agency staff who can leave their jobs with little notice.
