IN reply to the letter from Mary Powell (Lawless and chaotic on the A4103, Letters, January 1), I moved here 11 years ago. The next day, the road was quiet and I thought: ‘How lovely. It’s not as busy as I’d thought.’ Little did I know that a few hundred yards up the road a man lost his life and the road was closed. Since then I can recall about 15 serious accidents all within 1.5 miles of our house.

The speed limit is 40mph through Lower Eggleton, but only residents seem to observe it. If a camera was recording speeds, they would be between 50 and 70mph. I have been informed that it is too expensive to install a camera, so offenders carry on with no fear of being caught.

The other week I found a dead stag by the side of the road obviously hit by a vehicle. Badgers, pheasants, foxes and many cats, including my own, have all died. We do need help to slow the traffic but it’s not coming, so instead we see smashed warning signs, hedges, fences, houses etc.

In fact, speed limit signs are usually found in overgrown hedges as the council can’t afford to maintain the verges.

So, be warned, drivers, it’s just a matter of time before it’s your turn to be upside down in a farmer’s field.
