THIS year, while writing our Christmas cards, we will be including Eskinder Nega, a journalist from Ethiopia who has been imprisoned for 18 years after he criticised the Ethiopian government and called for freedom of expression. Amnesty International considers him a prisoner of conscience.

Letters of solidarity can make a real difference to people imprisoned for exercising their human rights. This reminds them they are not alone, and it can help to secure a prisoner’s release, stop harassment or change an unjust law.

We encourage all readers to get involved with Amne-sty’s Write for Rights campaign this Christmas. Just visit www.amnesty.org.uk/write and you will find all the information you need.
