AFTER reading the Hereford Times reporting another accident on the A4110 Canon Pyon Road, I feel the need to highlight the dangers of what I feel is one of the most dangerous roads in the county.

For nearly 10 years I have been driving from Hereford to my day job just outside Wigmore, so I drive just over 220 miles a week on this road and have seen many near-misses and some extremely careless driving.

Nearly every day I will either be stuck behind a lorry, tractor or cyclist. I’ve also seen people riding horses in the road, and in summer it seems popular with walkers.

Most near-misses I have seen have been when people have become impatient and overtaken but have then put themselves and other drivers at risk.

There have been times on the straight section near Aymestrey that I have had to come to a halt on a 60mph limit stretch as I was in danger of colliding with an overtaking car.

There’s also the Mortimer’s Cross junction where the council have reduced the speed limit. But it is still very precarious, with cars coming onto the A4110 from both sides.

I’ve had a number of near-misses past Leominster Car Auctions in Kingsland too where vehicles pull out without checking both ways.

Tractors use the road and luckily this autumn has been dry, but I’ve seen it caked in mud – another obstacle for drivers to navigate.

The road can also be misleading. There are lots of hills and sharp turns, and some stretches are very bumpy and littered with potholes.

Between Canon Pyon and Hereford the road gets very narrow. I’ve seen lorries get stuck on certain sections, plus there are quite a few houses, and I have seen drivers not checking both ways and pulling out into the path of oncoming vehicles.

I would suggest anybody using the road be extra vigilant and take extra care, especially with the dark winter months looming.
