ROBERT Turner complains his MP did not vote on the 'bedroom tax' (Tax change, Letters, September 25). I am grateful for the work Jesse Norman does and his stand on the military action in Iraq.

His example has led me to read Hansard. Entries on September 4 dealt with backbenchers' motions; first on puppy and kitten sales, second Jesse Norman on non-league football and Hereford United's position. Both debates were impressive – effective examination of business conduct that I consider callous pursuit of profit.

The first debate recommended action, the second was merely 'considered'. A third debate was on reading standards – a national scandal. Again, no action suggested.

How can we effect change? I ask Mr Turner to find some way of joining with others who want a better way.

The recent Hereford Civic Society Forum impressed me by the number of people working to find the facts, learn about the processes and trying to see implications of government policy on planning and local government.

How refreshing to discuss community matters without resort to party political posturing.

The Scottish debate has shown us that we need to engage the young and all sections of the community – including immigrants! I've only been here 29 years but feel Herefordshire has formed me and made me want to learn more about both local and national decisions.

Any suggestions for forums which might lead to positive momentum?
