THE ‘bedroom tax’ is a flawed idea. However, last month, a Bill went to parliament to help with some of the problems.

When passed, it will safeguard the housing benefit of those who need the ‘spare’ room for medical reasons and the many who have not been offered viable alternative accommodation.

This Bill tries to make the system fairer while preserving the aim of freeing up larger properties for larger families.

This measure will affect many in Herefordshire, yet MP Jesse Norman was absent from Parliament for the vote.

At least he was being consistent, having done the same thing for five of the last seven votes on the subject.

Maybe he was called away on something he saw as more important, or was busy preparing for his speech for September 10 on the riveting subject of whether a particular candidate was constitutionally allowed to apply for the post of clerk to the speaker of the House of Commons.
