AT our last meeting on Friday 25 April 2014, the Board of Hereford Futures Ltd asked me to write and, through you, thank the people of Herefordshire for their forbearance whilst the Old Market site was developed. In particular we wish to thank the local businesses and all those people who live and work in Hereford for their patience and understanding

The Old Market will open on1 May 2014 as a modern, high-quality retail and leisure extension of the city centre. This is believed to be the only new city centre development of this nature in the UK to open this year. 1100 new jobs are being created which will bring benefit to many. Thanks are due to Herefordshire Council for their wholehearted support to the work of Hereford Futures Ltd, and our partner Stanhope Ltd, their contractor Sir Robert McAlpine and the eventual leaseholder British Land who provided the funds that the construction.

The obligations of Hereford futures Ltd have been taken over by Herefordshire Council. My board of directors who have given their time and expertise free of charge over the past 8 years are delighted that the Council are able to take on this responsibility in-house. We urge them to maintain the focus and momentum necessary to go beyond these first steps of developing the Old Market and reducing the risk of flooding-which kept many businesses, homes and roads dry the last 2 years.
