WITH reference to Steve Kerry's letter (Readers' Times, February 27) regarding the High Town paving repairs, I would like to suggest something which I believe could be done at the same time and would make a real difference to improve the look of High Town at a relatively low cost. The Old House has recently been repainted and looks wonderful, so why not light it up at night?

There are some coloured lights around the house which do absolutely nothing to enhance its looks and I cannot work out for what purpose they are there. Surely these could easily be replaced with up lights similar to the very effective lights used to light up the cathedral in a beautiful way. The cost could be reasonable because the power is already available, but the effect could be dramatic.

The other suggestion is that to enhance this year's Christmas lights, why not have Christmas trees with coloured lights and decorations in the house, bringing it to life?Again, I believe this would be very effective and the cost would be very reasonable. Incidentally, the bull has been lit up extremely effectively.

I strongly believe that if these changes could be completed before Christmas this year it would help our High Town businesses at a time when they will be feeling the effects of competition from the Old Market. I also would like to think that these ideas do not have to be debated at several meetings to be approved.

I would love to hear from Steve Kerry to know what he feels about my suggestions.
