WHAT a wonderful opportunity for the Civic Society’s forum on Hereford city’s future, on September 17, to promote what this city could be.

In one edition alone, the Hereford Times has stories of the uncertainty over the historic Buttermarket; the prized cathedral documents on loan to a US museum; the photographer’s legacy recording the postwar development of our, still, best preserved medieval city structure (which may now be stored in Rotherwas in our new archive building which is, in my opinion, inspirational) and the new river crossing which will provide a beautiful pathway to this significant and uplifting area.

We have so much that is unique. I trust Fiona Phillips will ask what these decision-makers prize and how they will work towards it?

What will their legacy be? We cannot afford controversy, delay, and ill-budgeted plans such as the incinerator reported in the same paper, let alone any more of the court-contested decisions detailed over the years.

You also report on the excavation in Dinedor – very much thanks to Herefordshire Archaeology and the Heritage Lottery Fund. It is timely that we are able to explore the development of our area, so much bound up with Rotherwas.

More than 5,000 years of habitation, appreciating this place of special water, caring for the land and animals, working together to build a better life.

There have been difficult times and many changes; the success or failure of crops or world events have dramatically affected population but from the vision and community effort that contributed to such lasting memorials as the Rotherwas Ribbon and the Munitions Factory, perhaps this link is as of much importance as one to the Edgar Street Grid.

I hope that the meeting will not just be a talking shop of vague aspiration. Can the panel show they have learnt to build consensus and deliver what they promise?

Many thanks to the Civic Society and Friends of Castle Green who do so much work, so willingly.

May your voices be heard and the answers be open and constructive.
