THE profile of charities is on the rise as the thick belt of austerity continues to tighten its unwelcome grip.

Herefordshire people have a wellearned reputation for dipping into their pockets to help others when times are tough, but there’s another aspect of giving which is equally important. That is, of course, the giving of time.

One charity looking for volunteers in 2013 is SSAFA – Forces Help.

We look after serving and former military personnel and their families. In 2012 we handled more than 80 cases in the county and volunteering for SSAFA is an opportunity to learn new skills as well as gaining a sense of achievement.

We provide face-to-face contact to ensure veterans and their families, young and old alike, get the support and assistance they deserve.

The people we help range from the widow of a national serviceman to a young veteran of a current conflict.

All volunteers receive full training and are paid expenses. If you would like to find out more about volunteering for SSAFA Herefordshire, then please call 01432 273932 or email herefordshire@ ssafa.org.uk.
