A GROUP of friends was chased and attacked by an angry mob after leaving a pub in Ledbury.

A court was told that Stuart Woodward was “looking for a fight” with other yobs before assaulting two men on a doorstep.

Woodward, aged 19, of Lower Road, Ledbury, was sentenced at Hereford Magistrates last Tuesday following the attack on September 18. He admitted two counts of common assault, while a second defendant was previously sentenced.

Sally Hewitt, prosecuting, said a group of three friends met others for a drink at the Prince of Wales before leaving at 11.45pm. The trio heard shouting from across the High Street and became aware they were being followed.

Reading a victim’s statement, she said the group ran home but were followed by Woodward and another man, who looked “angry, pumped-up and aggressive”.

“There were four of five males in a group shouting, and it looked like they were on something and drink,” said the statement. “They were clearly up for a fight. Stuart tried to punch me and one of the blows struck the left side of my face. I had the keys but I couldn’t get them out of the pocket. I went down and Stuart tried kicking me.”

The court heard that the victim’s mother answered the door, while one of the culprits was known and arrested.

The assault came two months after Woodward received an 18-month community order, which included alcohol treatment and unpaid work.

Philip Cornell, for Woodward, said his behaviour was improving and claimed prison would be a backward step.

“He is responding positively, his social skills are improving, and he’s able to contribute positively to the community,” he said.

Magistrates imposed a new 18-month community order with a supervision requirement for the same period. Woodward must also complete 100 hours unpaid work, and pay compensation of £150 to his victims.
