YOUNGSTERS at Ledbury Primary had a road safety lesson with a difference last week, when a huge Wincanton lorry turned up at the school car park.

Youngsters were even allowed to climb into the cab, to get some idea of what a driver can see when making deliveries.

The event was the highlight of Road Safety Week at the primary, and one that pupils will be sure to remember.

Jill Evans, the school's deputy head said: "We have had a wonderful week. Simon Bayliss and Mark Stinchcombe from Wincanton spent three days in school.

"Simon started the week off with an assembly on road safety. The children were fascinated by the range of trucks they have and the products they deliver, as well as the road safety messages.

"After the assembly each class, from our 2 year olds, who have just started in our Nursery, to our oldest children in year 6, had a 25 minute workshop outside with the lorry. They learnt about stopping distances, blind spots and how little a driver can hear in the cab."

Mrs Evans added: "We were amazed to discover that twelve bicycles can be hidden in the blind spot. Children of all ages really enjoyed these activities and were able to talk confidently about the dangers around lorries and how to stay safe.

"Apart from the serious safety messages, delivered everyone enjoyed climbing into the cab and sitting in the driver’s seat. We were amazed at how high we were and how small the cars parked nearby were."
