OLYMPIC medal winner and former Newent Community School pupil Vicky Holland returned to her old school on Monday to speak to the students.

Vicky, who returned from Rio with a bronze medal, for the triathlon, chose to visit the school rather than take part in the same day's Olympic Parade in Manchester as she did not want to disappoint students at her old school.

The 30-year-old who spent her secondary years at the Watery Lane comprehensive took part in PE lessons, gave pupils some top tips, and also gave advice during a special assembly.

She said: “The school really set me up for my career, there are great facilities and great opportunities to get involved in sport. During my time here I did swimming and running, sports I do now, and also tennis, hockey, netball, rounders and others.

“I’ve had to put in blood, sweat and tears but if you work hard and dream big you don’t know what you can achieve, your hard work will be rewarded.

“I still hold some of the school records, you’ve got a challenge on your hands.”

Assistant principal Martyn John said: “We are very lucky she chose to come to see us today rather than be at the parade, as she had said she’d be here first, before that invitation. She’s part of our school family, she wanted to come back to see people at a place that’s been an important part of her life.”

Principal Alan Johnson said: “We are delighted such an inspirational former pupil came back to see us today. Our aim is to give every child who comes here the opportunity to fulfil their dreams and she is proof that if you put in the effort you too can be outstanding in your field.”
