HUNDREDS of visitors from around the country homed in on Much Marcle last weekend for the annual Big Apple celebration, at harvest time.

Organisers said one aim of this year's event was to reveal the many different ways "to celebrate local apples, orchards and cidermaking".

Spokesman, Jackie Denman said: "The cider and perry making was in full swing at Woodredding Farm, Avenue Cottage, Hellens, Gregg’s Pit and Awnells Farm. "Westons’ tractor and trailer shuttled back and forth all weekend delivering visitors to the different venues, and. visitors, local residents and those involved in the events have all declared the weekend a great success."

She said that some venues described "record breaking" attendances.

Mrs Denman added: "The event was blessed with sun and blue sky, especially on Sunday, and groups of friends and families soaked up the relaxed atmosphere in the orchards and farmyards. Gregg’s Pit sold out of sparkling perry and Hellens sold the last of their 2015 bottled perry.

“So many people having a lovely day out and a whole district lifted and benefitted from the occasion."

Retired cidermaker, Jean Nowell. “I got round all the venues and everyone was having a great time.”

Another visitor spokes of “fabulous few hours spent in and around Much Marcle”.

The Big Apple is now an annual event now, and not just in the autumn, when the apple and pear harvest is ready.

Now organisers are looking ahead to the spring, for the annual "blossomtime" celebration.

This event will once again bring many visitors to the Marcle Ridge area, when the attraction will be the fruit blossoms in local orchards.
