JOHN Masefield sixth formers were recently offered the chance of visiting concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Only two places were available, under the Lessons from Auschwitz Project, and the school ran a selection process for the trip to Poland.

A school spokesman said: "As we had more students than places wanting to take up this ambassadorial role for the school, we launched an application process in January. "Following this two Y13 students, Alexander Haigh and Dan Clark were successful in their application and were honoured to represent the school."

The trip involved an orientation seminar, a one-day visit to the former Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland, and a follow up seminar.

The spokesman added: "More than just a visit to Poland, the course is a journey of learning and exploration – about the history of the Holocaust and about the world we live in.

"The experience has been incredibly moving and thought-provoking for the students and their next steps are to become ambassadors for the project by completing a project of their choosing to disseminate to other students and in the community about lessons they have learned."
