MORE than a year ago I read an article in the Guardian about a survey that was conducted, where people were asked to choose which quotes came from a lads’ mag and which were made by a convicted rapist.

Most people couldn’t tell who said what, and I thought, surely, this would be a wake-up call to everyone who says: ‘Oh, stop whining. Lads’ mags are just a bit of fun’.

They’re wrong on so many levels - the way they describe women, as well as the portrayal of women as nothing but sex objects, there for no other reason than to be silent and sexy (I can hear cries of ‘shut up you feminist!’ - as if that’s a bad thing).

Of course it’s damaging, and yes they should be removed completely, not just covered up.

But equally as damaging are the celebrity magazines that scream from the shelves ‘Kate’s post-baby weight loss regime’ and ‘brave Kim Kardashian steps out without make up’.

Sadly, it would be a fairly ‘brave’ thing for a female figure in the public eye to leave the house without piling on the make up, as they know they will probably be torn apart for their natural looks in the next issue of OK! magazine or the Daily Mail’s Femail section.

And all the people saying: ‘Oh, well if you don’t like lads’ mags then surely you’re also offended by magazines that feature women in bikinis on the front?’

Of course I’m not offended by a picture of a woman in a bikini. I’m offended by the words that usually accompany them -  ‘How to get Paris Hilton’s washboard stomach’ or ‘Kelly Brook has let herself go, as holiday snaps prove’.

Do they not realise the effect these stupid captions will have on young girls and women reading this? We already have enough pressure on us to never leave the house on a ‘bad hair day’, to lose baby weight in two weeks, and God help us if we dare step out without having removed every bit of body hair.

This hatred of women has spread everywhere and while I would love it to vanish instantly, that will take time. But for now, you don’t have to look far to see it.

And don’t even get me started on the Blurred Lines music video/lyrics.
