McCARTNEYS report an entry of 486 store cattle and 460 store lambs at Knighton Market Autumn Prize Show.

The Prize Show and Sale of store lambs was kindly judged by Mr Jim Davies of Shrewsbury and sponsored by Richard Jones ATV. Results were as follows:-

Class 1: Best Pen of 15 or more Suffolk cross or Native Breed Store Lambs 1st C Evans, Springhill £63 2nd C Evans, Springhill £55 3rd T R Dyke, Dolfor Farm £44.

Class 2: Best Pen of 15 or more Continental cross Store Lambs 1st P R Price and Son, Llanshay £54.50 2nd D J Poole, Cregnant £54 3rd G S Evans and Son, Treluggas £51.50.

The store lamb trade was very similar to that of the previous sale a fortnight earlier and reflects the current finished trade. Overall lambs averaged £52.33 per head selling to £63 per head for Suffolk cross wether lambs from C Evans and Son, Springhill. Also to £59 per head for Texel cross ewe lambs from A P Davies, Blaenglyn. £55 per head for Texel cross ewe lambs from D Morgan and Son, Upper Esgair Rhiw and Suffolk cross mixed lambs from C Evans and Son, Springhill. £45.50 per head for Texel cross mixed lambs from P R Price and Son, Llanshay. £54 per head for Texel cross mixed lambs from D J Poole, Cregnant; Texel cross wether lambs from R D Gardner and Son, Nantyrhunna and Texel cross ewe lambs from J Bright and Son, Upper House.

The prize classes were kindly judged by Jordan Brothers, Bridgnorth and sponsored by Allflex and the results were as follows:-

A yard of quality cattle saw a trade that matched with a ring full of buyers. Store steers averaged 227.58 pence per kilo and £1051.09 per head selling to 301 pence per kilo for a 345 kilo British Blue cross steer to £1040 from A P Davies, Blaenglyn. Also to 294 pence per kilo for a 395 kilo Charolais cross steer to £1160 from H M and G Davies, Neauddllwydd. £283 pence per kilo for three 375 kilo Limousin cross steers to £1060 per head from S J C Morris and Sons, Whitcott Evan. A 480 kilo Pedigree Limousin heifer from T P Jerman, Church Farm and two 490 kilo Blonde D'Aquitaine cross heifer from M A Rogers, Upper Heath.

Young feeding bulls averaged 213.86 pence per kilo and £962.86 per head selling to 245 pence per kilo for a 380 kilo Limousin cross bull to £930 from M J Dyke and Sons, Gwernfach. Top price per head was 1000 for a 435 kilo Limousin cross bull (230ppk) from T M and E M Williams, Nantyguifr. Also to £990 per head for two 475 kilo Limousin cross bulls from M and M Price, Bailey Mawr.
