THE future of a rural county church has been secured for future generations after receiving almost quarter of a million pounds in lottery funds.

Andrew and Patsy Marson's application to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) – on behalf of Preston Wynne PCC – was successful to the tune of nearly £250,000.

The church is uniquely located in the middle of field but provides the village both from north and south with an impressive landmark.

Despite a small number of regular worshippers, those who attended a public meeting in the village hall more than 18 months ago agreed the Grade 2* listed building should be preserved and prevented from falling into ruin.

Apart from urgent repairs to the church to prevent water penetration, the project will develop displays in the church to depict the history of the village and its rural way of life.

These, it is hoped, will be of interest to local schools and to those who visit the church.

Commenting on the award, Andrew Marson said: "We are thrilled to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and are confident the project will secure the future of this historic building and generate greater understanding of its unique heritage within our community.”

Although the church only dates back to 1742 it is thought to be on the site of an earlier place of worship. In Victorian times the church underwent refurbishment with the installation of pews, some of which are reserved for those living in named properties with those at the back 'for the poor of the parish'.

In more contemporary times a memorial was erected to the airmen of a bomber who died in a crash at Rosemaund in 1942.

Those involved with the project hope that by highlighting these historical events and the life and work of the village, the community will become more aware and involved in the history of it and interest in the historic church will be preserved for posterity.
