OPPOSITION is growing against plans submitted for two separate broiler unit developments in the north of the county.

Corbett Farms Ltd is asking for permission to build two poultry units and feed bins on land west of Eaton Hill.

The scheme also involves widening an existing access, creating a new access track and associated development.

Leominster Town Council discussed the plans at a meeting last week but deferred making any recommendations.

However, Cllr Jane Lacy said there was a real problem with phosphate levels in the county and that one of the biggest contributors was poultry units.

Cllr Pauline Davies also referred to information received from Helen Hamilton, of Marches Planning and Property Consultancy who said Eaton Hill should be retained as a hill of beauty for future generations to enjoy.

However, Cllr Clive Thomas said conditions could be placed upon the development if it was given permission to go ahead.

Janet Smart, who lives close to the site, said: "In my view, Eaton Hill should be retained as a hill of beauty overlooking Leominster for future generations, as in the past, to enjoy.

"These poultry units and a new access plus 'associated development' will set a precedent never to be reversed – who knows when more units will be applied for?"

She said she was also concerned about the run-off into the River Lugg which is designated as a SSSI and a Special Area of Conservation.

"Access off the A49 – one of the busiest trunk roads – is extremely worrying," she said.

"Poultry units create noise and unpleasant odours which might harm the surrounding neighbourhood."

Representations on the plan can be sent to Herefordshire Council until September 22.

Meanwhile, plans have also been submitted for two poultry buildings, new access and for the conversion of a building to house a biomass boiler near to Knapton Green.

The applicant, G T Williams, wants to build the development on his land at Rogers Farm, Bush Bank.

More than 25 letters of objection have been received while Birley with Upper Hill Parish Council has also highlighted the concerns of local residents.

In a letter to Herefordshire Council it said the site is located in relatively close proximity to residential properties, with the nearest being just 120m away and the majority of properties in Knapton Green being within 300m.

Concerns regarding odour, noise, the impact on the highway and flooding have also been highlighted.
