THE sister of a man who died in a car crash on a Herefordshire road is taking on a fundraising challenge to raise money for the service which was first at the crash scene.

Gabrielle Wemyss' younger brother, Ian, died last November aged 24 when the car he was travelling in was involved in a crash in Much Birch on the A49.

The Mercia Accident Rescue Service [MARS], a charity which provides pre-hospital immediate medical care for Herefordshire and Worcestershire, were first to the scene and ensured Ian was able to get to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

Gabrielle said: "Without the help of MARS he would not have made it to the hospital and I would like to repay them for what they did for me and my family.

"I would not have been able to spend the last weekend with my brother and we would have been unable to donate five of his organs to those on the waiting list."

In his memory and to raise money for MARS she is doing an eight-day trek of the Great Wall of China this September .

Ian and Gabrielle grew up in Manchester but their parents moved to Herefordshire when Gabrielle was at university and Ian decided to go with them.

Gabrielle, 27, who lives in Manchester, said they remembered Ian on his birthday in July by inviting friends and family to their parents' house in Phocle Green near Ross-on-Wye.

Ian loved cars and his parents have built a garage to house his beloved Peugeot 106.

All of the costs of the trip to China are self-funded by Gabrielle so any donations will go straight to the charity.
