JOHN Kyrle High School student, Alice Wilson, has won a competition run by St Hugh’s College, Oxford University.

The prestigious essay competition, named after the novelist and biographer, Mary Renault, was open to students who haven’t studied Latin or Greek and was simply entitled Classical Reception. It was left to the students to interpret this according to their own interests. The original deadline was extended because there were so many entries of a very high standard.

Alice’s achievement follows on from her success last year in being the UK winner of the Magna Carta 800 essay competition, for which students wrote a Magna Carta for the 21st century.

For winning the Mary Renault Prize, Alice will receive a financial gift, a set of Mary Renault’s novels as well as an invitation to a series of lectures by renowned classicists and a dinner with them afterwards.

Nigel Griffiths, headteacher, said the school continued to be very proud of Alice and her achievements in these prestigious national competitions.
