WHITTON and Llangunllo WI members got together for a ladies night to celebrate 100 years of the Women's Institute starting in the UK. WI members and guests were welcomed to the event by members of the two WIs with a glass of bubbly and canapés.

During the evening there was the chance to try all sorts of cocktails, lots of canapés and a selection of other foods and various coffees and teas. There was a knitting and floral demonstration, bee keeping information and products for sale and a display and demonstration of vegetable garnish through history. Dorothy Mills president of Whitton WI welcomed everyone to the event and said proceeds would go to the Whitton community project to help fund a village defibrillator and to local projects and community charities in Llangunllo. Dorothy then introduced Ann Jones chairman of the Welsh WI who told everyone how pleased she was to be with them for the event. She went on to say the WI are very good at sharing their skills and that this evening was a chance for everyone to learn something new. She also told members about events she had been to recently to celebrate the first ever WI in the UK. These included a service in St Peter's Church, Carmarthen where there was a procession of Welsh WI Banners and how she had been to Oxford Cathedral earlier in the week to give a talk about the history of the WI movement that was started in Wales in the middle of the First World War. After Ann had spoken the traditional WI song Jerusalem was sung followed by the English and Welsh National Anthems. At the end of the event Powys/ Radnor WI Federation Chairperson Kath Graham thanked members of the two WIs for putting on a very interesting and enjoyable evening.
