BELL BANK CLUB FOR THE BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED - In July Sheila Leighton gave us a talk on the fund she and her family and friends set up after her husband Keith’s death from a brain tumour 28 years ago. Money has come from so many sources – coffee mornings, jumble sales, funeral donations and dances.

Also Headway House, Credenhill, Birmingham Mews Department and Birmingham University research. The fund can be used by anyone with a tumour or any other brain illness, to help with travelling expenses to hospital. Sheila is running a half marathon in Birmingham with her daughter on October 18. If anyone would like to sponsor this worthy cause please ring 01497 820748 or at Just Giving Workman/ Leighton.

August was an eventful and exciting month for the club members.

It started with an invite to the home of Bob and Val Jacob to help them celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. The hospitality was second to none, the wine flowed and their was an abundance of delicious food. We sang congratulations and then Bob regaled us with some surprising songs which had members in fits of laughter.

The following week John Price treated us to a film show. He had filmed events at the recent vintage steam fair and the celebrations in hay to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. It was lovely to watch especially by those members who were unable to attend the celebrations in person due to ill health.

Later in the month John showed us a video of his recent visit to the Mechanical Music Museum at North Leech in the Cotswolds. It was fascinating and made us want to visit. We are so lucky to now have Judith Wilkinson for the exercise and relaxation sessions which are loved by all and are so good for our health and well being.

August also sadly saw the passing of a much-loved and long term member Nonie Hodges, who died just after reaching her 90th birthday. We held a minute’s silence in her honour. She will be greatly missed by everyone.

Maddie has been keeping well and attending with Eileen. She is such a gentle soul and a much-loved member of the club. After over 20 years of devotedly writing this report Eileen has decided to stand down. I will be taking over knowing that it wont be easy, as her reports were always beautifully written and so well loved. Thank you Eileen for all your dedication over the years, we salute you.

GARDENERS ASSOCIATION - For our September meeting, Mr Robert Champion treated us to a super talk on geraniums and pelargoniums. Well known to us, all these plants provide loads of colour through the summer and can be used in beds, containers and hanging baskets.

Our next meeting is on October 13, when our speaker will be Mr Frank Hardy telling us about ‘all our yesterday’s’, gardening and gardeners from about 1900 to the present. Gardening today is very, very different from 100 years ago.

Think about it, no garden centres, no bags of compost, no pesticide sprays etc. No fridge freezers either so vegetable growing was planned around the growing seasons and would have been very eco friendly.

Visitors and new members to the gardening club are always very welcome. If you would like to join us for a taster evening we meet every second Tuesday of the month in the Community Centre at 7.30pm. More information on the club and it’s activities can be obtained from the secretary, Len Day on 01432 880657.

PATRONAL AND HARVEST FESTIVAL - Sunday at 11am at St Cosmas and St Damian Church.

Once again this ancient 12th century church celebrates its annual Patronal Festival with a sung Eucharist and a celebration of harvest thanksgiving.

Although it was declared redundant in 1974 the church is open daily to visitors and there is one service each year. The choir of St Mary’s Church, Dilwyn will lead the singing.

Saints Cosmas and Damian are healing physician-brother saints of the third century, and are the patron saints of the Royal Society of Medicine. Members of the medical professions are warmly invited.

The church will be decorated with harvest produce and floral displays for the festival.

Refreshments will be served in church after the service and all are welcome to join.

The Churches Conservation Trust warmly welcomes members of the Cosmas and Damian Society from Canterbury to the service. The new team vicar of Leominster, the Rev Matthew Burns will celebrate and the preacher is the Rev Nigella Tyson, former vicar of Kingsland.

All are welcome to this candle-lit service to commemorate the patron saints and celebrate the fruits of the harvest.
