Bishopswood

WI – Twenty seven members and their friends met at Bishopswood WI met at the village hall at 6.30pm on June 12 for an open meeting. We started as usual with Jerusalem and the business meeting, taken by the president Mrs Ann Jones, who outlined the many local and county events planned for the future.

Cards and small gifts were presented to the four members with June birthdays. This month’s meeting was arranged in two parts and after a welcome cup of tea the first speaker was introduced, Helen, an oncology nurse from The Haven in Hereford. The Haven is a respite and treatment centre for breast cancer sufferers and their families. Helen became interested in breast cancer because her husband’s family are cancer gene carriers.

The Haven Charity was started by Sarah Davenport from Herefordshire who was working in London. Appalled by the lack of emotional support for those affected by breast cancer, she sold her business and set up the first Haven in Fulham. The Hereford Haven was opened in 2010 by the patron, HRH Prince Charles. At present there are three Havens with another five planned, including one in Worcester. Each Haven works alongside the NHS and has a breast care nurse in charge.

People, either women or men, can refer themselves or be referred by a doctor or consultant. Havens offer counselling, medical and practical support and advice and provide friendship and various activities such as yoga and ‘walk and talk’ groups.

About 50,000 women and 400 men will get breast cancer, in Herefordshire about 300 women and maybe two men will be diagnosed.

Helen ended on an encouraging note – treatment nowadays is so good that a diagnosis of breast cancer means living with a chronic disease, 20 years ago it was a death sentence.

The second part of our meeting was more lighted-hearted as Kari and George from Hart’s of Monmouth gave an extremely useful and interesting talk about the joy of a well-fitting bra and how to achieve it. They gave us a brief history of the bra, first made in the 20s by Mary Phelps Baker from two silk handkerchiefs. With the help of brave George as model Kari showed us both ill-fitting and properly fitted bras. All the staff at Harts are trained bra fitters and both Kari and George are trained in mastectomy fitting. It is a family run business with the comfort of the customer as their priority.

The next meeting is on July 10 at 6.30pm, our summer social with time to chat and relax.

YOUNG FARMERS CLUB – What a fantastic fortnight we have had, starting off with the fun ride on May 24, with 111 riders enjoying a wonderful scenic ride of approximately 12 miles over local farm land stopping off for a refreshment break at Mill Half before continuing their ride back to the starting point at Upper House Farm, where delicious hot food and homemade cakes awaited their arrival. We even had riders from as far away as Cardiff taking part with hugely positive feedback received and requests to make it an annual event. This was followed by the tractor run on the next weekend with some 47 tractors taking part on a journey of approximately 25 miles, which took them up through Woodseaves and on to Mahollom Farm, Kington, where they enjoyed a lunch break before continuing back to their point of departure at Upper House Farm for tea and home-made cakes. It really was quite a spectacle seeing them driving back up through the village, from the very old tractors to the very new. Our very grateful thanks to all the local farmers who allowed us to ride or drive over their land and to everyone who helped both beforehand and on the day at each event and to those who provided the delicious food. Not forgetting of course, everyone who took part in both these events to make them such a huge success. A donation from the tractor run is to be given to the Air Ambulance Fund.

It is now full steam ahead with preparations well underway for our 70th anniversary celebration dinner and dance which will be held in a marquee at Upper House Farm on July 4.

This promises to be a very happy occasion bringing together some 300 past and present members and friends from over the past 70 years, with lots memories to be exchanged.

Once there, a chance auto accident and the kindness of a young woman, Marguerite, in the village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val inspires Papa Kadam to set up a Indian restaurant there. Unfortunately, this puts the Kadams in direct competition with the Madame Mallory’s acclaimed haute cuisine establishment across the street where Marguerite also works as a sous-chef, resulting in an escalating rivalry.

Old Radnor

WI – Eric Rees was the speaker at Old Radnor WI’s June meeting.

Anne introduced him to members and guests for the evening. The subject was ‘People in History’.

The lady he spoke about was an unsung hero of Wales. Her name was Clara Thomas. Born in 1842, she became the richest woman in Wales at the age of 22, after inheriting vast amounts of land and 14 coal mines in South Wales, to name a few things. During her lifetime she gave away the equivalent of £40 million in today’s money. She gave to charities such as churches, schools and hospitals. Living most of her life in Llwynmadoc in Wales, a plaque in her memory may be seen at Llandrindod Hospital in recognition of her donations. Never marrying, she died in 1914.

Valerie Burden gave the vote of thanks.

The competition of ‘An old postcard’ was won by Cicely Bayliss, 2nd Lucy Jones, 3rd Sue Lloyd and 4th Anne Goodwin.

Members who took part in the County Show at Knighton in May did well, coming 8th in the competitions. Lucy Jones did well, coming first with her Victoria sandwich.

Members took part in the county quiz held at Cross-gates. They did well and came in eighth position.
