THE new Hereford Cattle Market once again proved to be the ideal venue for the popular annual Junior Field Day of the Herefordshire Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs.

There were 12 exciting displays of the junior exhibit to the theme Space and the two entries from Pontrilas YFC and Kington YFC impressed the team of judges.

They will go forward to compete in the YFC Section at the 2013 Three Counties Show at Malvern.

Members showed off their skills over a further 28 classes of home-made cookery, floral arrangements, exhibits, woodwork, artwork and photography.

The farmyard band competition made a welcome return to the sale ring with teams making music using only items found around the farm.

There was fun to be had in the obstacle course with a difference, the pot luck and the yoghurt challenge balanced the need to know how to operate a tractor and plough safely and carry out basic checks on a car.

The junior members from Teme Valley YFC followed up the club's success at the County Rally and they came away with the winning NFU trophy on the day.

Junior members from Eardisley YFC put in a strong challenge and gained second place overall.

The three junior members from Lugg Valley YFC made a sterling effort and were well rewarded with the Roger Williams Trophy.

The next events in the HFYFC calendar were the Kington Show and Show Dance on Saturday while members now look forward to the HFYFC county ploughing match on Sunday, September 16, at Herefodshire College of Technology’s Holme Lacy Campus.
