Police have this morning sealed off a Hereford city centre pub following a serious assault yesterday.

Forensics are currently working outside the Golden Fleece in St Owen Street after a man in his 50s was punched in the street and fell to the ground.

He sustained serious head injuries and is currently in a critical condition at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Two men in their 50s have since been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and are currently in custody at Hereford police station.

It is believed that an altercation started in the pub shortly before the assault.

Four men then went on to the street where two of them were being aggressive towards one of the others.

Police are keen to hear from any witnesses, particularly two women who were at the bus stops opposite the Shire Hall and came to the man's aid.

Anyone with information can call Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Murphy on 101, quoting reference number 480S 06/04/12.
