THE gas leak that has caused serious traffic problems in Hereford city centre this week has been fixed.

The problem surfaced on Newmarket Street on Tuesday, one of the city's busiest routes.

One lane was subsequently closed near to the Edgar Street roundabout, which had knock-on effects elsewhere, including Aylestone Hill.

"It wasn't that a serious escape in terms of the amount of gas lost, just a broken main," said Jane Taylor, press officer for National Grid.

"But is was in an awkward location and it did cause traffic problems.

"It was a routine job and the workers worked late into the evening to get it done until it was finished.

"With escapes, we do not know when and where they will happen, so all we can do is get it done as quickly as possible."
