FIREFIGHTERS tackled a kitchen fire in Westhope on Saturday.

Crews were called at 3.50pm and used a hose reel jet to extinguish the flames, while isolating the power supply and ventilating the property.

The fire caused extensive damage in the kitchen, while the rest of the house was also smoke logged.

“Fortunately the house was fitted with a working smoke alarm which activated as the fire started,” said station commander Neil Pigott.

“Neighbours heard it, and noticing smoke coming from an upstairs window as well, immediately called the fire service.

“Their actions undoubtedly saved the house from further damage.

“As it was, crews found a severe fire in the kitchen as they arrived but we really believe it had the potential to be far more devastating.”

It is believed that a faulty dishwasher caused the fire.
