VOLUNTEERS are wanted to reduce the number of toads killed on Herefordshire roads.
Every March large numbers of the Common Toad come out of hibernation to find a mate only to meet their end crossing roads while heading to breeding ponds.
Amey and Herefordshire Amphibian and Reptile Team (HART) are calling on volunteers to help reduce the number of toads killed.
Their work includes erecting signs at known toad crossing sites including Falcon Lane near Ledbury, Perrystone Court in Hereford, Bodenham Lake, and Harcourt Road in Mathon.
The project team is enlisting volunteers to patrol these sites and move toads, frogs and newts to the safety of the nearest breeding pond.
Anyone interested in volunteering should email editor@herefordhart.org and Amey, which delivers services to Herefordshire Council, will provide equipment for volunteers.
