A RURAL Herefordshire business has made it into the nation's front rooms.

Emma’s Pigs, based near Preston-on- Wye, has featured on the BBC2 series Heritage Heroes which focuses on people dedicated to saving Britain’s heritage.

The company is dedicated to preserving traditional British pigs that fell out of favour in the 1950s when farmers were encouraged to adopt more intensive systems of farming.

Some breeds such as the Dorset gold tip and Yorkshire blue were lost altogether and there are now only nine British Breeds left, eight of which are at risk.

Pete and Anne Cianchi, partners in Emma’s Pigs, believe that it is only by farming these pigs and encouraging people to eat the pork that they can secure a future for these animals.

They also encourage other people by running pig keeping courses. Visit emmaspigs.co.uk for more information.
