ORGANISERS of the county’s first apple pie and pear crumble competition were delighted with the number of entries.

The competition, organised in partnership with Hereford City Events, Hereford Farmers’ Market and Herefordshire Food Festival, aimed to get real people and real chefs involved in the run up to the annual food festival.

“Holding the competition at the weekly farmers’ market in High Town brought more new customers to the Farmers Market”, said David Griffiths, chair of the Farmers’ Market group.

Judges of the competition included the mayor of Hereford and Sir Ben Gill, chairman of Visit Herefordshire. The winner of the apple pie competition was Jo Wright, and Susannah Edmunds took the pear crumble award. Each was presented with a fantastic hamper from Hereford-shire Farmers’ Market by David Griffiths and chef Jean Christophe Novelli.

This competition was a taste of things to come. The 2012 Flavours of Herefordshire Food festival will be held in the centre of the city and organisers are aiming to ensure maximum community involvement in this celebration of local food and drink.

We have so much to be proud of in our county and we should be delighted that the city is able to support a weekly farmers’ market, indicating the enthusiasm of local people for buying direct from the farmers.
