AN ex-soldier says he will take action if he again sees advertising placed on Hereford’s war memorial.

Phil Bates, who served in the 16 Parachute Brigade between 1968 and 1976, said that choosing to display the Italian Food Market advert on the monument in St Peter’s Square was “disrespectful.”

The banner was tied around the railings of the memorial last Friday morning, pictured, before being taken down.

“I was gobsmacked when I saw it hanging around the memorial,” said Phil.

“I know it was soon taken down, but it should never have been there in the first place. If I see it there again, I think I will cut it down myself.”

The Italia In Piazza market was held in High Town on Friday and Saturday.

Councillor Mark Hubbard, who serves the Central Ward, said that an Italian worker put up the banner, but it was immediately taken down when the council heard about it.

“It was an inappropriate thing for the worker to do and should never have been put up in the first place, but as soon as the council heard about it they rectified it and everyone there behaved impeccably,”
