YOUNG Glasbury saxophonist Jack Taylor was the only British competitor to make the final 12 in the instrumental solo under-18 category of the 2011 Llangollen International Eisteddfod.

The following week he consolidated his success by taking the instrumental Blue Ribband at the National Eisteddfod in Wrexham.

In Llangollen, Jack was awarded second place with Wai Yuen Wong, the winner of the Hong Kong Music Festival taking first place. But in Wrexham, he took the title in the 16 to 19-year-old category and was winner of the woodwind solo competition.

Jack, a student at Gwernyfed High School, gave a scintillating performance of Dubois’ L’Espagnole on the alto sax.

His ambition, having gained a place at the Royal School of Music in London a year early, is to continue his musical studies in America and pursue a career as a professional classical saxophonist.

This year he is also planning to enter the annual BBC Young Musician of the Year contest, the preliminary rounds of which start in September.
