A ONE-WEEK run of Bill Kenwright’s The Country Girl brings TV co-stars Martin Shaw and Jenny Seagrove back together at Malvern Theatres from Monday.

The pair, who starred in hit show Judge John Deed together, bring the powerful story of washed-up actor Frank Elgin – a desperate, demanding alcoholic who comes by the chance to star on Broadway – and his long-suffering wife Georgie to the stage until Saturday.

Believing that Georgie is the reason for Elgin’s career decline, young director Bernie Dodd, played by Silent Witness and Wire in the Blood actor Mark Letheren, strikes up a stormy relationship with the actor’s wife – but how far should a woman go to redeem the man she loves?

For Shaw, who appeared in the show’s original West End cast as the hotshot director almost 30 years ago, his own career could not have been more different.

He has since become one of Britain’s best known actors following TV roles in The Chief, A&E and Inspector George Gently, and numerous stage appearances in A Man For All Seasons at the Haymarket, An Ideal Husband on Broadway and others.

Jenny Seagrove, whose TV and stage appearances include A Woman of Substance, Local Hero and an acclaimed performance in the West End premiere of A Daughter’s A Daughter last year, also brings a wealth of experience to the performance.

● Meanwhile, the stage adaptation of Nina Bawden’s award-winning Carries’ War is running at Malvern Theatres this week before heading off on tour.

Starring Brigit Forsyth and Hannah Waterman, this hugely successful stage adaptation comes straight from London’s West End and brings Bawden’s heart-warming, funny and evocative coming-of-age tale (based on her own experiences as an evacuee) to life in a magical and beautifully staged production.

For the UK tour, Brigit Forsyth (Thelma in Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?) is Mrs Gotobed and Hannah Waterman (Laura Beale in EastEnders) takes the role of Auntie Lou.

Carrie’s War runs until Saturday, September 4. To book, call the box office on 01684 892277 or go to malvern-theatres.co.uk.
